Angel Gomes has admitted he suffered a scathing dressing down in front of the Manchester United squad which left him on the verge of tears.
Despite being handed his senior debut by Jose Mourinho at just 16, Gomes needed a harsh reality check to reach his potential. After becoming United’s youngest player since Duncan Edwards in the 2016-17 season, Gomes’ hype skyrocketed when he replaced Wayne Rooney in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.
However, Mourinho soon expressed his disappointment with Gomes’ performance in a reserve match, leaving the youngster feeling humiliated in front of his team-mates. Gomes told the Times: “He didn’t think I had played up to standard [in a reserves match] to warrant a place in the first-team squad, and he just really let me know.
